THE surprise resignation of chief executive-designate Charles 'Chip' Goodyear from Singapore's Temasek Holdings will come under the spotlight when Parliament sits on Tuesday. Three Members of Parliament, including Mr Lim Biow Chuan (Marine Parade GRC), have tabled questions on it.
Mr Lim is asking for the reasons for Mr Goodyear's exit after less than six months at the investment agency. He will also ask if Mr Goodyear was given a 'golden handshake' by Temasek.
Mr Seah Kian Peng, also from Marine Parade GRC, asked if there is a deadline for the search for a new chief executive.
Opposition MP Low Thia Khiang of Hougang wants the Finance Ministry to explain the 'strategic differences' that Temasek had cited for the American's exit. He also asked if the Government was concerned about leadership renewal at Temasek.
Mr Goodyear, 51, joined the Temasek board in February and became its CEO-designate in March. But on July 21, Temasek said it was parting ways with Mr Goodyear, whom it had wooed for more than a year. Its statement said there were 'differences regarding certain strategic issues that could not be resolved'. Mr Goodyear left Temasek last Saturday.
Mr Lim said on Monday he was seeking more answers from the Government as he had received feedback from concerned Singaporeans about the resignation.
'There should be more transparency and explanation on this issue,' he said.
There is also keen interest in whether Mr Goodyear was paid any gratuity or bonus on his resignation, Mr Lim said.
'It's useful for the Government to say if we did pay him, how much it was and whether it was justified. I would be concerned if it was a huge sum of money.'
Another issue to be raised is nation building. Two members of the House have filed an adjournment motion, which allows MPs to tackle an issue in depth. They are Mr Michael Palmer (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC) and Nominated MP Viswa Sadasivan.
